Book Group

'Ladies' of Ashendon (and adjoining villages) meet once every two months to discuss a book they have all read during the previous months. It is a lovely excuse just to get together and has certainly helped many members to rediscover the fine art of reading – i.e. it makes us pick up a book and read it.

Gatehangers' Association

Towards the end of the 1950s, a new gate was purchased for the village allotments (now the Playing Field).  It lay against the hedge for several years until a couple of villagers decided that it was about time that it was hung.  So, one Saturday morning in May 1962, Stan Ewers and Cyril Beattie completed the task.  John Boughton suggested that they should mark the occasion and, to celebrate, they went for dinner in the pub.  One dinner wasn’t enough; they decided to form the Gatehangers’...

The aim of the Oil Group is for us all to get our oil as cheaply as possible.

When any member is running short of oil they email Roger.  He then emails everybody in the group to see if any others require oil. Once he has received their replies he contacts a number of oil companies and negotiates the best price.  It takes about two weeks from his original email for members to receive a delivery.

Roger gets a price from 3p to 8p per litre...

Broadband

Broadband is available either through standard BT phone lines from the Waddesdon exchange (actually located in Quainton close to the Railway Centre) or via Village Networks.  Ashendon is not connected to the exchange by fibre optics so broadband speeds can be slow.  The Parish Council is lobbying Openreach to provide fibre but this could take some time.  Village Networks provide a wireless link.  All that is required is a line of sight betweem aerials. For further details, see their website...
